Hello, I would like to stay two nights in one hut when hiking Routeburn / Kepler. I was just wondering if this is worth doing (I do have a day extra) and if so: Do you have a favorite? Just the paradise place thing, you'd never want to leave? :-) Thanks for your advice
Well I think this is a good enough idea to have done it on the Routeburn!!! I started at the Glenorchy end and spent 2 nights at Routeburn Falls Hut. The idea was (1) to give myself a rest day (I am in my 50s) and (2) to give myself the maximum chance to get good views at the Harris Saddle. So on the rest day I actually walked up to Harris Saddle without my backpack to look at the great views. The next day it was completely clouded over and misty - not many views. I am walking the Kepler in January 2008, and have booked three nights in the huts. Should the weather demand it there will be enough flexibility for an extra day, looking at the lightness of bookings so far. So if that is what you want to do, go for it. I remember hearing several comments from other walkers that they simply hadn't thought of doing that. There is a maximum of 2 nights at any hut in peak season, and of course there is no flexibility at all on the Milford - I never got to see McKinnon Pass as it rained a metre that day!!! | 1
