Mosquito net in south india?

Hey,
I'm packing for my trip and wondering if I need to bother bringing my bulky mosquito net as I travel around the south in March/April.
Any thoughts?

Hi, I asked the same questions last week (have a look at the following forum pages) and decided to take one with me. I'll be in South India for the best part of April - between Mumbai and Chennai - and bought a free-standing net, just in case. 10p

ive just returned from southern india 3 weeks ago and i definately needed a net. at least they are only bulk not weight.

I'm in Hampi at the moment and thanking myself for bringing my net. Plently of mozzies around this time.

can't speak from south india experience, but in my experience from other tropical parts of the world, mosquitos are MORE predominant at hot and rainy times of the year. lots of stagnant water for them to breed in. if that helps, at all.

If your only in India for a short time (few weeks), then just burn a coil in your room or use a plug in, you won't get poisoned by the fumes, they will. Nets are o.k. if you keep them closed, but after you've rolled around in the bed and untucked it, you'll be wakened by the buzzing in your ears and then it'll be too late.

do i have to bring a mossie net with me to India or can i just pick one up there for cheap cheap cheap.... :)

There are 3 kinds of nets available:

1) nylon - lightweight; bulky and highly flammable
2) cotton - lightweight; bulky and reasonably safe (from ignition)
3) silk - light; very small to pack and reasonably safe (as above).

If you can find and afford a silk one - that's what I'd recommend. Also, make sure that you get one that is treated with permethin (or get the ingredients to treat it yourself.
