| redbaron4804:39 UTC15 Jan 2012 | Hi, I am looking for a Mongolian town that is closest to the Russian Siberian towns in terms of flora and fauna. I would like to see what Siberia is like without going over the border into Russia. The closest town I could find was Sukhbaatar but the photos from internet search looked more like steppe than forest. Khatgal and Altanbulag looked like steppe too. I would like a town, because of the facilities, and I would like to try the sauna into snow thing

First one is that Mongolian transport system isn't developed highly and It also takes time to reach Khatgal and another thing is if you want to be right now It will be difficult because of winter but that wouldn't be serious problem if you really willing to be there. Good Luck.

Go to Finland where this is more common than Siberia.
Much of Siberia is steppes. Not sure where you get the idea that it is otherwise. It is either grasslands or forest and miles of it.

Thnx Ruth It would be nice to go to Finland but I have time constraints this time. Whilst Finland is the home of sauna , there are still many saunas thru out Russia and indeed Mongolia. My terminology regarding steppe mightnt be the best , but I regarded steppe as open grassland and forest as forest , and its the thick forest that I want to see.
