Mongolia for 1 person

Country forums / North-East Asia / Mongolia

Ok, so here's my drama. I have less than 2 weeks, maybe 12 days total or so to spend in Mongolia in late July/early August. My friend that was going to join me just bailed, so now I'm on my own. I know that the prices for a jeep hire are a flat fee, whether you have one person, 2 people or 4. Ideally, I wanted to go with my friend and find 2 others to join in. Now, I'm on my own and am concerned about still going, because of the difficulties in coordinating with others to share costs. It's hard to find people with the same timing and wanting to go to the exact same places (gobi, khustai, terelj). Also, since I'm on such a tight schedule, I don't have 2-3 days to sit around and try to organize when I arrive. Are any of you going during my time frame, looking for the same places by any chance?

What do you recommend that I do?

Thanks!
S

Several thoughts -
1. Contact the guest house in UB that you intending to use and ask them their experiences placing singles with others
2. Look at a company called OTAM which is Open Tours Around Mongolia and would seem to perfectly suit your needs
3. Place ads for travel companions on the appropriate branch here in the TT
4. Place a post on this branch for travel companions being sure to title the post appropriately (ie something like "solo traveler looking to join group touring Mongolia late July")

More thoughts - there are things to do in and around UB that you can easily organize yourself so that you aren't spending 2-3 days looking for companions and doing nothing else. Take a look at this thread: 7 days in Mongolia

That's really your only problem. You might have to go where others are going. However, I saw at least 3 tours going to the Gobi for 7-10 days last August. The people you are going with are probably more important than the actual destination since you will be stuck in a van with them for a week and a half.

Maybe you can also arrange in advance some tours through the guesthouses.
Contact them via e-mail
Try with:

Khongor GH: http://get.to/khongor
UB GH - http://www.ubguest.com/index.htm
or Idre GH: http://www.idretour.com/
there is always many people arranging trips..

I went with them during my stay in Mongolia
Have a nice journey!
