Mongolia by Motorbike

Hi all
Just returned from one overseas adventure so what better time to plan the next one!
My boyfriend and I are looking to travel around Mongolia on motorbikes next year and I was wondering whether anyone can provide advice/tips on the following:
- Buying motorbikes in mongolia - quality available? price ranges? any paperwork required?
- Getting around - good maps available? Suggested routes? Places to avoid?
- Safety - dangers to look out for?
- Time of year - when is best to go?
My questions are brief as we are only just starting to plan, but in a nutshell we are both well-travelled, intrepid travellers who like to avoid tourist traps and get to 'know' the countries we travel in. Unfortunately we will only have about a month to take this trip, but already I am excited at the thought!

First, If you only plan to spend a three to four weeks then buying a bike and then trying to sell it within such a short period of time probably won't be possible. Nothing happens quickly in this part of the world.

Time of year will depend upon your tolerance for cold and where you intend to travel. Most tourists and travelers prefer summer as other seasons are colder. There are websites with historical weather information.

For traveling by motorbike, I suggest that you look at sites that specialize such as horizonsunlimited.com

I personally didn't ride a bike in mongolia but did meet a guy who rode one from UB to the far west (about 1400 km).

the best time to go is from mild june to mild september as weather okay, no rain, june and september have still cold nights.

On Ub you can find good mapy but also you can find in your own country or internet, just see my webpage for this: http://www.terramongolia.com and maybe find the one good before to leave and so prepare your trip there.
in 30 days you can discover a lot even average will be 30-45km/H. problem you must me autonomus in countryside so ahve a tent and food and water, even you will stop at night often to nomads you have to have all to survuve some days as it's easy to have some mecchanic trouble or if you go in Gobi to have difficulties to find nomads as just a few lives there respect arkhangai by example.

Now there is Mongolian company which rent's out motorbike's and vehicle's seemed to me they had Yamaha 250's and 450's. You can also track them down on Mongolia Lonely plannet guide book under the vehicle rentals. They seemed to be reliable folks. I think their web site was www.drivemongolia.com
