Mombassa - Tanzania

First trip to this part of world , hoping to go from Mombassa - Tanzania , i heard its easy by bus and occasionally by dhow boat , has ideally i want to go to the islands b4 dar. How easy is it to get a dhow? Is it a nice trip and what sort of cost? I will be travelling alone.

I'm not sure about Kenya but in Tanzania it's illegal for tourists to by on dhows without a motor. Because sometimes the wind stops and dhows may spend days floating about. (You could still try though.)

The bus is easy. I used Scandinavia. There are direct buses all the way to Dar Es Salaam but you can get off anywhere along the way. In Mombasa proper you will probably have to get off the bus at the ferry over the river. You'll walk down the steep track down to the ferry, get on the ferry, and at the other end walk up the hill again and get back on the bus.
Border formalities are also easy, just have the correct amount of US$$ ready in undamaged banknotes ($50 for most nationalities).

Oh and please don't use slang like 'b4' in an international board such as this, many people here do not have English as their mother tongue.

DONT use a dhow. Unless you wanne live. Read the horror stories in LP. These things capsize all the time, and seas can be really rough.

Are TZ transit visas issued at this border crossing without being hassled for onward tickets? Would a ticket home from J'burg be sufficient?
