mobile, why to work it when travelling

hello,

i'm going to South, Centrl and North America soon. going through hostel so should be able to keep in touch with family. Was wondering though if I take a mobile (cheapest possible and only for text) what is the best option:

Take a sim card from here and top up on the website?

Take a phone and buy a sim card for every country I travel to? thta on I worry that my parents won't be able to keep track of the numbers...

It depends.
Generally speaking a local simcard in each place would be cheaper than a simcard that you can use in more than 1 country. However if all you are gonna do is text and not do it much, and that you are not staying in each place long enough - some simcards have a min cost - setup package. You might find it cheaper or the same and less fuss just to get a simcard that works in more than one country.
