Melbourne Apartments & Jobs

I am travelling at the moment and will be spending about 5 weeks in Melbourne working to top up the funds. I am hoping it will be possible to rent an apartment out there? I presume it would be cheaper than staying in a private room in a hostel for the whole time? Does anyone know of any good websites where I could sort an apartment out? Where would be the best place to live. I will probably do bar work or temping.

Also, if i went for the bar jobs, will anyone hire me if i say i only have 5 weeks or should i say i'm staying longer?!

You can't rent an apartment for that short a time - &quot;renting an apartment&quot; in Australia usually means 6-12 months, providing references, signing a lease, paying a security bond, being responsible for utilities, and so on. All other (weekly - short-term) apartment rentals near the city will be quite expensive I suggest. You could look for share accommodation, but again, unless someone was particularly under pressure, they would not normally want you for a five-week blow-through. Unless you can find a very cheap single room somewhere in a boarding house, etc, you would be lucky to find something cheaper than the $140 a dorm bed might cost you per week. As for barwork - you are required to undertake an RSA Course (Responsible Service of Alcohol), so you might be restricted to other hospitality tasks. <BR><BR>If it were me, I would look for jobs online (various sources) and pitch a tent in a prosperous regional town or city - I think your chances of living cheaply and maybe finding very casual work (farm, laboring, bar, roads, construction, etc) may be higher than in Melbourne City - but I am speculating a bit. Good luck - but note a posting a bit further down the branch, about someone finding it hard to get work in Melbourne.

Hi was in Lorne on the great ocean road a while ago( 8 weeks) heaps of waitressing type jobs.........accommodation maybe at c/van park........easter u will have work but might struggle to get a bed somewhere.
