Margarita Island to main land Venezuela

Country forums / South America / Venezuela

We are flying to Margarita Island next week ( couple in late 40-ies) for two weeks. Planing to take one of the Canaima tours, to see Angel Falls and then considering going to Los Llanos. Should we try to purchase an organized tour from Margarita Island, or try to get to Ciudad Bolivar on our own using ferry and bus, and buy the tour there ? We are working on our itinerary. Any feedback will be appreciated. We also think about Los Roques.

Booking trips in Caracas comes too expensive. We are in low season and prices in Ciudad Bolívar airport are cheaper, because you get in contact with Canaima's tour operators, for instance: Wey Tepuy, Excursiones Kavac, etc.

They offer whole packages with airfare, lodging, foods and excursions included, the usual standard is 3 days and 2 nights.

NOTE: because we are in the middle of a weird dry season, departures of tours to Salto Ángel depends on rivers conditions. It's used to change the Salto Angel boat trip for a sightseeing flight over the fall and the Auyantepuy (the table topped mountain where this cascade falls from), and other smaller tours through Canaima National Park.

Hello Lesveg1,

Please bear in mind that we are now in the dry season and the Churún River leading up to the Angel Falls is currently dry in most places; therefore, you will not be able to get to the base of the Falls. If you want to see the Falls, which have water in them all year round, though there is less water in the dry season obviously, you will have to take an overflight of the Falls. You may wish to book a tour directly in Margarita, with a tour operator over the internet, or go to Ciudad Bolivar, however, the latter means hunting around Ciudad Bolivar for a decent tour operator.

As for Los Roques, I would definitely take advantage of the fact that you are in Vzla to see some of the best beaches the Caribbean has to offer. Please bear in mind that there are severe power cuts that are currently affecting the whole country, even more so Los Roques, but don't let that deter you from going. It is a truly remarkable place if you like the beach.

Travel safe,

Most exciting and fun to try to go to Ciudad on your own. More organized and easier to book on Isla M. Depends on how flexible and adventourous you are :-)
By the way, if you want to do a river trip - Rio Caura w/ Para Falls is phantastic and can be done during this time of the year.
Enjoy!!

Tours from Margarita Is. to Canaima are operated by Linea Turística Aereotuy. The use to run a day tour every Thursday. Flight from Margarita to Canaima is over 3 hours long one way (stops in Maturin and Ciudad Bolivar), then about just 4 hours to have lunch in Canaima and a shor boat trip on Canaima Lagoon, and fly back.

You don't have to hunt a tour operator while in Ciudad Bolívar. Write an e-mail or give a call and deal in advance.
