Maps in Medan

Country forums / South-East Asia Islands & Peninsula / Indonesia

Hello friends!

I am trying to find road maps of Sumatra. Here in Penang, they seem to be completely out of anything that suites my needs. I'm cycling through this wonderful place for the second time and was surprised, as last time Penang had a wealth of maps (all in Little India) on anywhere and everywhere in Indonesia. Anyway, it's a lost cause trying to find anything here now. But I'm holding out hope for Medan. Anyone know of a place where I can find very detailed and sound maps of the island once in Medan? I was really hoping to pick up the map made by Nelles. Great map with all of the km markers and everything. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Hai there, wish can help you with this site, as they also presenting map you might look for.
MEDAN City is more likely as one of the official site for tourism's promotion of North Sumatera.
Have a nice take a look then..

Hi,
I think your best best would be to head to one of the Gramedia bookstores. There is one in Sun Plaza. They often have a decent range of maps.

Agree with ceritacerita, head to Gramedia. I also found Gramedia to be honest with regard to using a credit card in their stores.
Most of the maps I have used have been from those stores. But not sure how accurate the roads are. My purpose for purchasing was more for general location.

I went to the Gramedia bookshop in Medan about last November (there are two in the 'book' which specifically mentions maps). I wasn't looking for maps but remember looking at them. There were the usual ones (Nelles, Periplus) plus a lot of local ones -- large sheets of paper (A0?) -- showing a lot of detail eg full street map (a lot more than I needed).

Ive cycled in N Sumatra (and west coast Aceh pre tsunami) - Medan and getting out of it will be a challenge - was better for me with bike on top of a bus. Re maps there are many free gps maps (Ive got medan streets, most regional N and W Sumatra, some islands and other cities) u can download to a mapping garmin gps which straps on the bar stem. PM me if want more info.
