Manaslu Trek: Nepal

Interest forums / Trekking & Mountaineering

hello,

i have a trip planned to nepal in sept-oct of 2004. i am looking to do a trek around Manaslu ( Dolpo and Mustang are also options). i will be traveling alone as a female. these particular treks, i believe, must be done with a fully organized tour.

has anyone done one of these tours and if so, did they need the organized tour? did you organize it prior to arrival or on arrival to Nepal. i'm not much of an "organized" tour type of person but the remote aspects of these areas are appealing, as well as, the avoidance of some of the crowds and the company for a solo traveler. the price of these tours is also high...any suggestions for a cheaper methods or just reputable companies?

thanks much,

cyndi

I did Manaslu last Fall with Explore Himalaya and Project Himalaya. They treated the Nepali staff horribly with lack of proper cold weather gear, no food when we were at altitude and near no settlements and expected a porter with AMS to keep carrying his load among other issues. That said it is an incredible hike and I highly reccommend ity. You should be able to organise it at about $50 US a day expedition style. Get a licensed guide to organise it for you but you don't need a large company. Travel to the trail head and back will be extra.

$50 USD a day??????????? Which rip off merchant did you go to? You should be be able to organise the trip for a MAX of $15/day with a porter/guide carrying a day pack and staying at teahouses. Private email if you have any questions. I've been there 4 times, just returned from there 3 weeks ago Email at ozsqirel@yahoo.co uk

Seems to be a strange misunderstanding here...

Manaslu is only for groups, right? Lliaison officer, porters, kitchen crew, the lots. So what is this about?
