Luxor

Country forums / Africa / Egypt

We are supposed to be travelling to Luxor for 6 days on 26 September, changing flights in Cairo, but not stopping there (a trip we booked a while before things started to escalate in Egypt).
Has anyone been in Luxor recently?
How is the situation in Luxor?
Is there a curfew there as there is in Cairo?
Does anyone know if the archaeological sites are open?
We are both experienced travellers, travelling on British passports.
With with such a changeable situation it seems risky to go.
Your views and thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks

Seems to be fine. Check this local blog: http://luxor-news.blogspot.de.

Well, Easyjet have cancelled my flight in February. Although I feel this is more to do with the financial viability of this route rather than the unrest.

I'm a solo American who just spent four days in Egypt Aug 26-30) including Cairo, Giza and Luxor. Both Valley of the Kings and Karnak are open. But, it's a lonely time for vendors as tourists are staying away because of the political uncertainty. They are hurting and welcome any tourists. Karnak in high season with stable government averages anywhere between 10,000-20,000 visitors daily. While there on 8/28 my guide and I were the ONLY TWO PEOPLE in all of Karnak! We could hear our own voices echoing..it was eerie and a shame it was empty. At the Valley of the Kings not much better. One Western couple on their own, five Japanese with a guide and myself and my guide...that's it. As I walked up Hepshepsut's temple I was alone except for my guide. Great for viewing everything but as I mentioned, eerie too.

Thanks for your comments and welcome to TT. It would be more helpful if you put your experience in a new topic.

How did the curfew affect you in Luxor?

I am following the situation in egypt from a distance but as far as I learn in the news only 14 provinces out of 27 are under curfew (now from 9pm to 6pm) and Luxor at the moment was NOT between the 14 provinces under curfew.
I hope somebody can verify,

(the 14 beeing Cairo, Giza, Alexandria, Beni Sueif, Menya, Assiut, Sohag, Beheira, North Sinai, South Sinai and Suez, Ismailiya, Fayoum and Qena, also in south sinai the resorts os Dahab, Sharm and Taba are excluded).

Curfew (in the provinces where is applies) is now from 7pm Friday to 6am the following morning, and on all other days from 11pm to 6am the following morning.

PacificaMike,

Wow, you are so lucky to have seen Karnak, etc. with so few tourists. More like an adventure rather than a trip to Disneyland. I envy your trip, even though it was incredibly short.

Hi Rainow;
Have you been there?

Me and my husband are budget travellers from Turkey, age 33.
We will arrive to Hurghada tomorrow and will have 1 week liveaboard.
Our liveaboard will finish on 16th evening in Port Ghaleb and they may transfer us to Marsa Alam or Safaga or Hurghada which ever we wanted.

I am searching for SAFE way to visit Luxor and/or Aswan between 17th-19th.
We should return back to Hurghada on 19th evening.

Do you have idea with cheap prices?
May be we will take group tour cause might be safe.
Or if it safe we will search for bus and train.

Can you share your travel experiences?

Thanks
Burcu
