Little Corn Island

Country forums / Central America / Nicaragua

(also posted in Central Amierica branch....)

Trying to decide between places to stay on LCI. Right now we are deciding between Ensuenos and Derek's Place (north side), Carlito's (east side) or Hotel Los Delfines (west side). Any comments/advice regarding which side of the island to stay on? Comments on choosing between these specific places?

Thanks for any advice!!!

Depends on what ur looking for in a hostel. if you like it rustic, go to carlitos (this is also one of the cheaper places) or Dereks.
Dereks is very nice and beautiful, about a 20 min. walk through the jungle to the town, dive shops and restaurants.

I would opt for one of those.. it gives the real island-feeling.. they're not 'just another hostel' and thats really nice.

some tips:
If you walk along the beach from dereks to carlitos, watch out for the dogs at one point.. they scared the hell out of us..
If you wanna go diving.. Dive little corn is really good, not too crowded (i did my padi-course one on one) and the diving instructors are the nicest people i've met.
Looking for a good meal? The cuban place is delicious, and in comparison reasonably priced (10 dollars for lobster)
and as you heard before, if you see the kids selling coco-bread: buy it!! makes a really good breakfast or lunch!

have fun there!

Yes cuban place good!!!

I did meet a couple who said they stayed at Ensuenos and Dereks and liked the accomodations at Ensuenos better. We stayed at Casa Iguana, too expensive for what you get!

Are there food options at the Derrek's/Ensuenos end of the island or will we have to walk into "town" towards Carlito's et el. to find food everyday?

watch out for the dogs

Haha... The name of the Alpha-dog is Bushman. He's the friendliest, funniest dog. Very cool and loyal to tourists. He befriends tourists, follows them around protectively, escorts tourists across the island on hikes, never begs, and does not like locals. All the other male dogs fear him, and the female dogs swoon after him. It's a comical dog soap opera to watch.

The rest of the dogs are too scared to bother any tourists. Except the huge Bull Mastif at Love Peace Farm and the dogs at Dereks/Ensuenos.

Photos of the infamous Bushman are on my blog. He's a super-cool dog.

Derek and Anna serve EXCELLENT meals... just have to let them know in advance. Farm, Peace & Love also has wonderful 3-course Italian dinners with almost all ingredients made on their own farm (milk, eggs, cheese, oil, veggies...). Recent updates have been made to the www.bigcornisland.com website so many of the hotel and restaurant pics were taken only one week ago.

Sadly, the island top-dog Bushman met with a well-meaning visiting veterinarian last year and is now barking in tenor.

So much for preserving good genes.

As to food, I don't know if the Farm Peace & Love could be described as GREAT relative to the price. Both Derek's and Ensueno's have good food, and a bit cheaper ($8-$12).
