Learning Spanish in Bocas PanamaCountry forums / Central America / Panama
Hello there fellow wanderers. I have recently turned 20 and planning my first solo international excursion. I am on a short budget and wanting to add a few skills to my belt so i have decided to start this journey in panama to get my diving certification and hopefully drastically improve my spanish. I was hoping someone out there has some tips or experiences on language schools, possibly in Boacs del toro. Any ifo or feedback will be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Can't help with personal experience but check out Spanish By the Sea. I suggest you go there and study and then write up a thorough review. :) | 1
I know enough about learning spanish to know that it will not get done in Bocas! Don't get me wrong, I love it there, but it is not a place you go to study. Its way too much of a party place, you won't get anything done! Plus, eveyone speaks english there.... ALL THE TIME! However, it is VERY cheap to get your diving cert (open water). I believe I payed $120. | 2
I agree. If you can keep your nose to the grindstone, good for you. But trying to study spanish in a touristy party town just wouldn't work for me. I guess if I could get out of Bocas town, then I could focus... It's like trying to study in San Pedro, Guatemala... It was wicked hot in Bocas too. | 3
Actually San Pedro La Laguna is a fabulous immersion environment if you stay away from the dock which is easily done. The Cooperativa school there was my 5th CA Spanish school and one of the most productive immersion weeks I've had. I can see how Bocas del Toro would be a poor immersion environment, though; I studied on Utila with a very good teacher and made good progress but I think I heard more Dutch spoken on the streets than Spanish that week. | 4
Also, lessons cost a lot more in Panama and Costa Rica than in Guatemala, Honduras, or Nicaragua. | 5
Thanks for all the input | 6
