Kyoto - places to stay

Hi,
I will be staying in Kyoto for three nights in late August. Any hotel or ryokan recommendations?
My budget is in the 100 -150 / night range.

I was in Kyoto last month and stayed in this ryokan, which is great, here are the details :

Bathroom is shared but you get the full Ryokan experience, with futon bed and all that stuff !!!

you must mean 10,000 - 15,000/night, right? I think it impossible to stay anywhere for 150 yen/night.

I meant 100 - 150 US dollars - not sure what that converts to.

What are the pros and cons of staying by Kyoto station vs. Gion or downtown area?

Not sure how much it cost, but we stayed at the Heianbo ryokan. Very close to Kyoto station, which I found a convenient place to stay. Also some great eating places at the Cube, plus the yummy foodhall at Isetan. We got the tube to the Pontocho district when we wanted to go out, and buses were easy to use too.

Tokyu Hotel (4 Star) , the pricing is in your price range (127 USD per room per night). The Tokyu is a pleasant hotel and the rooms are well equipped. Rooms are beautiful (quite scandinavian actually), air condition works as you like and lovely shampoos, beauty set etc. in the bathroom. this hotel is in a very good location, 10 minutes walk from the train station, 5 minutes walk from the nearest subway station and has a bus stop just outside (buses are the best bet for travel around Kyoto

Gion is the best place to stay in my view, close from all major attraction and the architechture is real nice.

Kyoto station offers nothing particular...

$100~$150 is 12000~18000 yen. You will stay alone? Than you have much money! I think maybe you can stay very nice place for that much money one night. By the way, you are coming to Japan 3 weeks later, I think maybe now is good time to start pay attention to exchange rate and prices ;-)

No, I will not be going alone. I'd like to stay in a Ryokan. But having a hard time finding availability.

Update for anyone using the Thorntree to look: The Capsule Ryokan in Kyoto is probably the best place we stayed in our 3 weeks in Japan. Certainly the best value, best facilities, brilliant location. Perfect. Rooms were Y7800 for two of us which made it easily the cheapest place we stayed and it was fantastic. It only opened early 2010.
