A brave combo of Brit and Canuck lady producers recently made this terribly disturbing doc. Some 2,000 Guatemalan women and girls have been murdered over these past few years. Governmental indifference and law enforcement ineptness have yet to result in many arrests (even one?) and females continue to be raped and killed. Often, torture and dismemberment are involved. Deeply entrenched macho conservativism, too many guns (thanks to 30 yrs of unrest) and abject terror are the state of things now, at least for locals. This is an unsettling film that viewers will not forget. Spare a thought for the families seeking justice from a system that threatens them---clearly a case for putting pressure on the government. The President foolishly allows an ad hoc interview and after direct confrontation, lies that 'the situation is improving'. And rarely has the common suspect-inmate looked more completely immoral/tragically stupid on film.
Thanks for the review, mate - though, since it doesn't come by way of NYTimes... I do have to question your sincerity and dedication to this campaign. | 1
I'm fine. And yourself? | 2
