Kigali with a 3 year old?!

Country forums / Africa / Rwanda

My husband will be working in Kigali at the University hospital for a few months and I would like to join him with my 3 year old daughter, but am unsure if this is a wise plan. My daughter and I would probably go for a month. I have done some initial research about Malaria prophalaxis, and vaccinations, but still feel unsure about weighing the risks vs. the experience of going. I am in a MPH program and would love to do some research while I am there. Our contacts in Kigali are American MD's and seem to think my going and having a Rwandan nanny to help so I could do the research would be easy to arrange and a good experience for our daughter as well. Again part of me feels it could be wonderful, unless something really bad happens -- where to draw the line of safety VS. experiencing the world? we have traveled extensively pre-baby, but never to Africa and never with our daughter! any insight from someone who knows Rwanda/Kigali would be welcomed :)

Kigali is one of the safest cities in Africa and Rwanda is also perfectly safe to travel around. It's at a relatively high altitude so has a pleasant climate. It is however malarial and you should take a malaria prophylactic and you will need vaccination against Yellow Fever. I can recommend it as a clean, safe, if a little opressive introduction to Africa.

As developed as Kigali is I would say you have ZERO worries in bringing a healthy 3 year old to this city.

I had a severe hypoglycemic attack in Kigali a few years back (I'm diabetic) was convulsing on the ground (not good at all) and a Rwandan man called an ambulance for me which showed up in less than 5 minutes (this was near the downtown area) and I was being treated in an excellent emergency room by excellent Rwandan doctors. No problems at all for me.

Kigali is not like some of the other capitals in Africa (think Bangui, Sao Tome, Mogadishu, Malabo) where medical care is severely lacking. Kigali has so many foreigners that it almost feels non-African. I say go!!!
