Kidepo overland- anyone going or been lately? Dec 2011Country forums / Africa / Uganda
I am hoping to travel to Kidepo in northern Uganda in a few days or a week. Has anyone been and can speak to the security situation? Even better is anyone in Uganda and thinking of going? I would much rather go with a few fellow travellers and share costs in the park. There are two of us- a married couple- and it would be great to have more people on what should be an intense but incredible trip!
I really wanted to go when we were in Uganda but we had car troubles and so it wasn't to be. It's not the place to have anything less than a reliable vehicle! From memory it was 1.5 days hard roads to get there. If you are not up for self driving I remember that there was a road safari advertised on the notice board at Red Chilli Back packers in Kampala which seemed pretty reasonable value considering the logistics. If you contacted them ie Red Chilli they may be able to give you contact details. I believe you can also fly in though this will I'm sure be more expensive. As regards the security situ my understanding is it has been visitable for a year or so. I asked about it in the UWA office in Kampala back in May and they were happy to say the park was safe but fairly horrified we were thinking of driving ourselves there! | 1
I wanted to visit kidepo this trip but was put off by the amount of banditry in the last month along the eastern route (Mbale/Moroto). Maybe via Gulu is ok but a tour guide friend just advised me to leave Kidepo well alone which is what I did. If you do the trip please report back. | 2
See a report dated Aug 29 2011 from "Igiesse". As well try contacting Fugley Guest House which is in Kitgum. | 3
