Does anyone know if the Karakoram Highway is still open to turism after the 7 trekkers' assasination by taliban?
Yes, KKH is open to tourists, yes the bus from Tashkurgan to the border still runs. Any problems you might encounter will be in and around Kohistan, where they will group people into convoys and escort them through. My advice would be to check with the authorities in Gilgit, if you don't feel comfortable travelling overland from there you can catch a flight to ISLMBD. | 1
KKH is open all the way from Sost to ISB.Many foreign tourist making their way on every day basis. | 2
#1 Good advice about flying from Gilgit to ISB, but these flights are subject to cancellation because of local weather conditions in this mountainous region and even if you have a ticket for a particular flight you could be removed from the 'confirmed' list the previous evening because of the backlog of people who were bumped off previous flights. My experience was that I planned to fly in both directions but neither flight was possible and I simply didn't have time to wait several days with no guarantee of eventual confirmation. Road travel by KKH = scariest thing I've ever done (not so intrepid after all) but if possible hire air-conditioned 4-WD vehicle + insist on checking their tyres/seat-belts before travelling. Local operators will assure you that all these drivers are very experienced and familiar with KKH road conditions - this means nothing unless their vehicles are also safe. No one in Pakistan seems to think that fully functioning seat-belts are a priority. | 3
Yes it is open as said above. No direct bus from Taxugran to ISB.. you can get either PTDC or Chinese bus to Sost. Both are exactly same price, but Chinese bus is far better and comfy And than by van or shared car to Atabad lake.. and than over the lake by boat.. and than by 4x4 jeep from other end of Atabad lake to Ali Abad.. from Ali Abad you may get direct bus for Islamabad, departure timing in October 2012 was 15:00, or you may go by van from Ali Abad to Gilgit where there are plenty more options. 4 daily buses by NATCO, which even includes one Daewoo lux bus in its fleet and plenty more private companies as well. | 4
Open. No incidents for my group. An armed guard will accompany you in your vehicle during parts of the trip. People very friendly even in Chilas. As long as u don't hv bad luck your prob fine | 5
I think a luxury bus may b better than a private van. Our van was slow in general and ac did not work well. | 6
