Kampala to Nshongi Camp

Country forums / Africa / Uganda

Hi there,

we are going to uganda in nov 11 - we already booked the gorilla permit, but I still have one question.

How long will it take to reach the nshongi camp - is it possible to get there in one day?

They wrote, from kampala to kisoro it will will take 11 hours plus 1,5 hours with matatu/privat taxi and from kampala to kabale it will take 9 hours plus 3 hours by matatu/privat taxi to the camp.

I found s.th. about the post bus - what is the best/fastest bus

thanks for your help!

cheers kirsche

I did it 2 weeks ago, exactly the same family.

I stayed in Kisoro, and got private transportation from there. They leave at 6:00am, and wait for you at the park to drive you back. Did it with Emma, at Countryside Guesthouse, which I recommend. Payed USD 50 for the trip.

It will take you about 7-9 hours to reach your final destination in a day.

@marcelo30

How did you get to Kisoro? Which bus company?

I did in the other way round, and from Kisoro I caught a bus to Kampala, it was exactly 11 hours.

there where several bus company, I used Bismarkian (or something similar), I remember also Horizon and Jaguar, but there are many more companyes. All of them have 2 daily buses, from Kampala and from Kisoro. one in the morning around 7am and one in the evening around 7pm.

In the Nshongi Camp website http://www.nshongicamp.altervista.org/index.php/how-reach-us
they say that you will take 90 mins from Kisoro and 140 mins from Kabale buy car.
I don't think there are public transport to Rushaga.

If you do not want to wake up very early, risking to miss your tracking due the bad roads, I suggest you to be close to the traking starting point already the evening before.

you can use a bus to kisoro or you can hire a car and driver to drive you there..buses are cheaper but crowded and very uncomfortable..hiring a car would cost you around 200 dollars..to kisoro as it is like a 10 hour kourney..choice is yours.

The bus ride is faily good and cheap and aswell a good Africa experience ride!

Hi,

I was in Lake Bunyonyi before, spent 3 days. It`s great! From there you can go to Kabale (9 km), and take a shared taxi to Kisoro. Otherwise, you can find more people to share a car directly from Lake Bunyonyi to Kisoro (there is a shortcut).

8

We are thinking about doing the lake after the tracking - can you recommend any accomodation there

I stayed at Amagara. It`s a great place, with GREAT food. Nice atmosphere. I recommend!

I came back from Nkuringo yesterday.

It took us 11 hours to drive from Nkuringo to Kampala. The weather is not good as it rains every day mist makes the drive slow down to about speed 10 because visibility is very bad.

Wagtail camp site is also good for back packers. It is a few kilometers from Nshongi , Mishaya and Kahungye gorilla families.

Hi,

thanks for all the information - today we got the conformation for our permits - I called the wildlife office quite often ;-)

our first few days are fixed and the rest we will decide during our trip.

29.10.2001 - 19.11.2011 - looking forward going to uganda!

cheers kirsche

Perfect, enjoy your tracking, it will be amazing

which group will you track?

15

Of recent the road from kisoro has been badly affected by weather. remeber to hire a 4WD car. it will cost you 80$ both ways.

16

I guess he is trekking either the main gorilla group here Nshongi, Mishaya or Kahungye, since he will be sleeping at Nshongi camp.
