Jeep Rentals in Mongolia

Country forums / North-East Asia / Mongolia

We are going to be in Mongolia for 20 days and want to rent a jeep and drive around the country. We don't want a driver though. Has anyone done this before? Also we are having difficulties contacting rental agencies in Mongolia for price quotes and what not. Can anyone help with some much needed info?!!

It is possible but generally not advisable because infrastructure is so poor and you won't near where to obtain petrol, where the roads are, etc.

Instead of rental agencies, try some of the guesthouses and see what they have to offer.

I second everbrites post, we went out with a driver to the South and there would be no way we could have found half the places we stayed at or do the off-road driving. There are no permanent roads or signs pretty much in most areas so you would need to find your way by gps/compass and also have the coordinates of the places you were heading for. As roads move the maps aren't always up to date either. Hiring a driver meant we were able to find remote family gurs which were the highlight of our trip. He was also able to act as a translator and ask directions as even though he was an experienced driver he still missed a few roads, especially ones that didn't exist anymore!

If you do self-drive I too would be contacting the hostels rather than rental companies for info.
