J'bourg airportt to Sandton ?

Country forums / Africa / South Africa

Hi people
I arrive in J'bourg airport at 930pm and my hotel is in Sandton, which is the safest way to get to my hotel ? A hotel car? Taxi ?

Also I am looking for return flight to CT from j'bourg - do you know which site has best deals ? Which airline ?

Thanks a lot
nick

Hi

I would suggest a hotel car, but if they are not available, catch an airport taxi, but be prepared to pay quite a bit of money.

Right now, the cheapest (in price) airlines ar Mango (www.flymango.com) and then I would say Kahlula.

If you're on your own, then your best option is probably the Magic Bus. R110 one way per person, which is less than half the cost of a "regular" taxi. (R280.) But of course that calculation changes if there are more of you. Have a look at the "Sandton Shuttle" section near the bottom of that page. You'll see that it services eight Sandton hotels, but the driver will usually drop passengers in between those stops, on request.

The lowest cost flights are usually kulula.com (the budget arm of the local BA partner Comair), 1time, and Mango (the budget arm of SAA), followed by Nationwide. But I've also found that sometimes (depending on available travelling window and how far you book ahead, or even how late you book) BA/Comair can be the best option. Although when I did a test booking last week for Jo'burg/Cape Town in January, Kulula was the best (about R360 each way including taxes), and literally about half BA/Comair's fare. Yet the irony is that many of the Kulula flights (at that lower fare) are actually on the BA aircraft! You can tell that from the flight number. They all start "MN", but if that's followed by a four digit number (first digit 6 on the CT route), then that's a BA plane. So I assume you then don't have to pay for refreshments, as you would if you'd flown on a Kulula-liveried plane.

"Kahlula"?! Isn't that a drink?! :-)

But yes, of course, if your hotel has a free or lower-cost shuttle, then that's the obvious choice.

Arthur thats Kahlua (an ingredient of a dom pedro I believe) But not a bad shot for a Windhoek man !

4

Actually I knew that. (Gotcha!) But the alcohol ingredient of a "classic" Dom Pedro is whisky. A "Kahlua Dom Pedro" is a variant. And some would say, a sacrilege. (Not bad for a Windhoek man!)

Oops. Apologies to the OP. Just noticed that she said she's arriving at 9.30 pm. And the last Magic Bus is at 6 pm. So much for that suggestion.

www.airportlink.co.za/</a><BR><BR>That is an alternative.

I forgot about Airport Link. A relatively new service, I've seen their buses a couple of times. They have to be pre-booked. Their charge for one person is about the same as a taxi (provided you don't allow yourself to be ripped off by the latter!), but a possible advantage is that they meet you inside the terminal and you don't have to look for a taxi. But if there are two or three of you then a taxi becomes a better price.

The Magic Bus seems to also offer what I assume is a pre-booked service, as well as that "Sandton Shuttle". And with slightly better rates than Airport Link. To Sandton, one person is R255 (compared with R275) and each additional person is R30 (compared with R50).
