Itinerary Advise 2 weeks KenyaCountry forums / Africa / Kenya
I’m planning a 2-week budget trip through Kenia, starting next weekend (28. or 29. 11). Unfortunately there is not much of a plan yet, except that I want to go on a motorbike trip to Hells Gate Park from Nairobi on the 5./6.12. weekend, with a friend who lives in Nairobi. One option I consider is flying into Mombasa and departing from Nairobi, or vice versa, to avoid backtracking. After arriving in Mombasa I would explore sights in the vicinity and along the coast before making my way to Nairobi for the Hells Gate Park trip and visits to a few more destinations that are accessible from Nairobi, before departing. I’d like to visit 1-2 more parks for trekking and game watching but would also like to spend a few days along the coast. I’d like to get a good sense of Kenya’s diversity but don’t want to rush things. Most helpful at this point, I guess, would be concrete suggestions for an itinerary. Thanks!

I’ve now put together a few more details of my Kenya plans. Sun, Nov 29: Arrival Mombasa Does this itinerary make sense? If I arrive in Mombasa on Sunday and depart on Thursday evening by train, how should I best spend the time by the coast? I want to see Mombasa and do a few day trips but I’m not sure if Mombasa is the best base for this. How far up the coast should I go and where should I stay (Kilifi, Watamu, Malindi or Mambrui)? I’d love to go to Lamu but have been put off by warnings on the web sites of various foreign offices, which make Kenya travel seem like a very dangerous activity. I wonder how justified those warnings are. | 2
Kilifi is nicest, then Watamu is nicer than Malindi (imho). Lamu is better than all of them, but you don't really have enough time, regardless of security issues. Good things to see are the Gedi Ruins just off the main road on the turning to Watamu, and Fort Jesus and the old town of Mombasa. There are good beaches to the south of Mombasa island and at Watamu. Mida Eco Camp is a lovely place to stay, cheap - especially if you have a tent - and great food. | 3
