is Los Inocentes Lodge closed?

Country forums / Central America / Costa Rica

I'm trying to find a good place to stay near Liberia for a couple of nights in June. I was really excited about Los Inocentes Lodge, but I can't get in touch with them and think that they may have closed. Does anyone know anything about this place? If it is closed, can anyone give suggestions as to a good place near Liberia, that offers good horseback riding? I'm not looking for a group tour where all the horses are trained to follow the ass in front of it, if you know what I mean. Thanks for your help.

They say they are upgrading, but we shall see if the "upgrading" continues indefinitely. Meanwhile, how about giving this place a try?

http://www.canas-castilla.com/

It is the farm of a Swiss family. It is just a few kilometers north of La Cruz off the main road that goes to the border of Nicaragua.

They have horses. Definitely not as upscale as Los Inocentes.

Then there is always Amelia's Inn in La Cruz, only one of the very best small inns in the country.

Almost no one visits this part of Costa Rica. Maybe that's why it is still "tranquilo."

We had stayed years ago and notice when we drove by a few weeks ago that the gate was chained and there were large no trespassing signs posted in Spanish and English.

Try Hacienda Guachipelin on the slopes of Rincón de la Vieja.

If true, it's a shame. I stayed there in 1999 while on a school trip. We stayed up until 3 AM and drank guaro with Jaime, the owner, at his private outdoor bar next to his home. I still laugh when I look at the picture of a 21-year-old me holding a sign that reads "La Cabana del Guaro", while my friend is holding a bottle of Cacique in front of me. I'll never forget the two noisy scarlet macaws and the little toucan that would peck at your feet while walking around the check-in area of the main lodge. I also remember the beautiful sunset at the bar in nearby La Cruz with the two crazy parrots that sat upon the water heater (notice a bird theme here?). Does anybody know the name of that place and if it's still in business? It was on a cliff overlooking the Pacific.
