We got a reference number through STANtours for Iran (cost 45 dollars each) and this was issued in about 3 weeks. We then arrived in Istanbul and got our passport back with visa within one day, no hassles at all. The fee was 60 euros for Germans, 95 euros for British and 50 euros if you are Japanese.
The Japanese travellers we met did not have a reference number and also got their visa in one day. Not sure if the service is as efficient for all nationalities. Some friends of ours who were here a few months back on Dutch passports had to wait a week or so I think. Maybe it just depends on the time of year.
