Iran as an Unmarried Couple

Country forums / Middle East / Iran

We are in a very early stage of travel planning, would like to get an advise ...

We are a bi-national Chinese / German couple, not married yet (takes some time to arrange all the formalities). Would that effect travelling in Iran? For example would anyone check the marriage certificate when checking in at a hotel in Iran?

Or would you recommend to postpone the trip, until we are married?

No.no problem at all.As long as neither of you is Iranian.....

People might ask if you are married. Its probably easier to just say yes ;-)But they won't ask for proof.....

As long as you are not Iranian or Muslim then no one will care because all foreigners are weird.

Totally agree with the advices above. I stayed in a room with a Spanish girl from Thailand. I'm from Belgium...
It was not a problem.
Not the same for an Iranian or a Muslim ...

When I went to Iran with my wife in 2014, nobody asked about our marital status, even if she kept her maiden name in the passport.

Thank you very much for your encouraging replies.
I am sure that people in Iran are very hospitable, one of the main reasons to go.

Certainly we want to respect local culture and customs and not offend anyone.

Not that you need any further assurance, but my husband and I have different last names and when we travelled 6 months ago nobody in Iran asked us if we were married. The hotels definitely did not, and no Iranian we chatted with brought it up either.

Married or unmarried makes no difference when you visit Iran. The religious thing is more for show than anything else - of course there are religious people but they are quite friendly.

You can wear the quantity of make-up you desire. Iranian girls sometimes wear a lot of make-up and fancy hair styles. They like to attract attention and look good even when they are wearing the full monty.

Just abide by government rules and recommendations and you will be OK. I find the most covered women are often the tourists!
