Interesting places near Barcelona

Country forums / Western Europe / Spain

My wife, baby and I will be flying into Barcelona on Feb 28. We were looking for accommodations and it seems like the prices have been hiked everywhere for that week because there's the Mobile World Congress in town. We were thinking maybe we would pick somewhere lovely nearby to wait until it's all over on March 6. Any suggestions for a nearby town that would be fun to hide out in for 6 days?
Thanks in advance!

Ah yes ,the mobile world congress always get all hotels booked - business people even get that desperate to find something that they share hostel room ! It does end on March 2nd though, and most people will be heading home on the 3rd.

Girona comes to mind - it is big enough and far enough from Barcelona so the mobile word congress visitors won´t use it as a base (A problem that nearby Sites does have). About 1.30 bus or train ride, half that if you take the fast AVE train.

Girona is charming and not as busy as Barcelona, lots of restaurants and bars and while not enough to fill 2 full days, there are some good daytrips around: Figueras for the Dali museum, Cadaques on the costa brava, medieval Besalu, the pyrenees, Couillure just over the border in France...

That sounds perfect! I will be working online while I'm there and my wife and kid just need a good playground and interesting atmosphere to walk around in.

Thank you!

I agree, Girona is nice and underrated, but after 2-3 days it might become boring. If you have a car, you may move to Olot and do some easy trekking there and see volcanos.
