inter-railing itineryInterest forums / Travel on a shoestring
Hi :-) Me and my boyfriend are thinking of going inter-railing this July with a 30 day pass! Just wondering how realistic this itinery looks: London > Brussels. 2 days 2 nights Brussels > Antwerp > Rotterdam > Den Haag > Amsterdam. 2 days 2 nights Amsterdam > Berlin. 2 days 2 nights Berlin > Prague 2 days 2 nights. Prague > Brno > Vienna 2 days 2 nights Vienna > Budapest stopping in Bratislava 2 days 2 nights Budapest > Lake Balaton. 2days 2 nights Lake Balaton > Zagreb 1 day 1 night Zagreb > Lake Bled. 2days 2 nights Lake Bled > Venice. 1 day 1 night Venice > Florence. Including a trip to Pisa, 2 days 2 nights. Florence > Rome. 2days and 2 nights Rome > Naples. Including a trip to Pompei, 2 days 2 nights. Naples > Interlaken. Stop at Milan for a break. 2 days 2 nights Interlaken > Berne.1 day and 1 night. As far as we got. Total of 27 so there is room for flexibility. Feel free to be as critical as possible! Thanks
Hi! I recommend you to post your thread on the Europe-Western Europe branch as most of your destinations are covered there and you are more likely to find (more) experts about those destinations in that branch. As a side note, remember that in order to have a full day in any destination, you have to spend there two nights. | 1
I can be as critical as you want, even on this branch ;-) Far too many stops, too fast. You will spend much more time on trains,in stations and going to and from hostels than actually seeing and doing anything interesting....... | 2
how do you figure 2 days two nights? You're kidding yourself. cut out half and enjoy and leaern something. | 3
This trip will only be possible when teleportation is invented. | 4
Feel free to be as critical as possible Here we go... (drum roll)... Nah, just kidding. Let me just say that I+ wouldn't enjoy this sort of fast-paced itinerary at all, but I made the same mistake on my first Interrail trip - too many cities, too much time spent +between+ rather than +in cities. This is fine if one of your main targets is finding a new place to stay every second day, getting your bearings in a foreign city where you don't speak the language etc.; it's a bad plan if you actually want to soak up a bit of atmosphere. And you've indeed miscalculated the number of nights and days in each place - 2 nights means 1 full day plus your arrival and departure day. Example: Needless to say, you cannot even scratch the surface of cities like Berlin or Rome in 1 full day. | 5
Cut your cities list by half and you might have a more realistic itinerary. Better still. As you've got an inter-rail ticket, just start in London and play it by ear. If you end up only visiting 3 places so be it. | 6
you and he ar only going to see Europe through train windows. | 7
Lucapal is right. So are the others. Most veteran travelers have learned the hard way, that rushing around to see too many places in too short a time frame ultimately does not satisfy. Far better to be selective, commit to a smaller, more mangeable itinerary. Racing around can lead to illness borne of burnout, plus unnecessary arguments with those with whom you are traveling. All the palces that you eventually want to see will still be there next year and so on. Looking back over our decades of travel, my wife and I rank our fave trips as those where 1 or 2 countries 'max' were visited. Personally, for your proposed itinerary, we would need a number of months. I wish you the best trip in any case. Bon chance! I am done. The End. | 8
Would you step off the train in NYC and sat,"Obviously the whole U.S. is exzactly like this." ??????? | 9
It's a pity loozey seems to have lost interest in this thread. | 10
Just another one of those posters, that are only looking for advice and answers, and are too lazy to reply. And are too ungrateful for the help they did receive. | 11
