Info on buying a spirit house

Country forums / Thailand / Thailand

On my next trip to Bankok i would like to purchase a spirit house and am looking for information on price,if you know of a good shop to buy at and how to ship back to the states.
Thanks

my thai friend says they cost about 30,000 baht because if you don't pay a lot to get a good one it's bad luck.

but if you find a cheaper one which you really like, you can buy that and then pay an absolute fortune to have it blessed   :-)

Nah, there's of course a relation between the fancyness of the building and the fancyness of the spirit house.. But 30K if you have a simple house to live is a bit much.. Especially if it's one of those standard concrete ones.

So actually I'd go for a wooden one.. First of all they're nicer, and secondly it will be easier to ship compared to the cement ones.. those really weigh a ton.

Cheers,
Chanchao

what is a spirit house?

Possibly you could buy a wooden one, then take it apart to fit in your suitcase, and reassemble back home.

#4, Its a little house they put in front of all the houses in Thailand, for spirits to live in . it has to be furnished nicely, or the spirits will come into your house and haunt you. You must make offerings to the spirits too, maybe some fruit or insense.

Thanks for the story Mike N. $60US is a great price as I found a company in LA selling them but the average price for a good sized one was $400US and that's without the stand and shipping. Even with the shipping fee it sounds like the way to go. Now just need to find that shop in Bankok.

If you don't find them in Thailand, here is a Canadian Thai-German family and I'm pretty sure they ship anywhere. Prices in Canadian. There source is somewhere near Chiang Mai. There's also some info on the site that you might find of interest.

What a wonderful post! How original :-)

Now I need to play devil's advocate. The belief in SE Asia is that the land is possessed by spirits. When you build a house you are effectively evicting the spirit family so they will haunt the house unless they are given a new house in which to dwell. But the spirits live in SE Asia, not America or Europe. If you just want it as a curio then fine, but if it is for religious reasons as far as I understand you wouldn't have any spirits to move in.
