indian boyfriend

Country forums / Indian Subcontinent / India

Hello everybody!
I want to stay in Mumbai for some time in February with my indian boyfriend. He lives in Puri and tells that it would be impossible for us to stay in the same room together - because of the strict indian rules. That seems crazy to me, but he insists we should take different hotels. I am leaving for Hyderabad tomorrow, then Hospet and Goa, and believe that when I get to Mumbai I'll be in a shortage of money, so taking different hotels in the most expensive indian city doesn't seem a very good idea. He has never been to Mumbai before, but tells me he knows better. Has anyone here had familiar situation? I would be very grateful for any help. Thanks!

Your boyfriend is correct about the perception of unmarried couples staying together (if your names don't match on passports and if that is compounded by you not being of Indian origin), it makes things difficult and you will be treated differently in the hotel, by it's staff, room choice, etc. (they may even tell you that they don't have rooms when they do and may tell you that they need your room and you have to check out even if you have booked more than 1 night)I have been in this situation before as an US caucasian female with an Indian boyfriend and I myself didn't believe it until I experienced it! India is very conservative about this and I would respect his insight as he knows. He may be able to get you a better rate at the hotels in Mumbai if he negotiates for you, even if he doesn't stay there.

Travellers choose to travel to countries in different ways. Some choose with little background of the country. Its interesting how varied people are..

I have traveled with another white girl (not exactly a girl friend0 and had no difficulties with shared rooms, but I understand that there are difficulties if one is an Indian, even worse if the Indian is the girl.

If you go to small city's no one will ask you anything...Just relax.

There are occassions when I wish my wife and I would check into seperate hotels...chomping on chilli chicken at 2 a.m. and simultaneously guzzling down the booze (interrupted only by the occassional ecstatic burps) is not my idea of fun.

That seems crazy to me, but he insists we should take different hotels

Oh so dismissive....post #2 rings so true...

In Mumbai they told me it is forbidden by local law to share a room as a foreigner with an Indian. You have to hire another room in the same hotel or maybe have to take another hotel.
That's in Colaba / Fort area.

I think that rule is because of prostitution / rapes.

Youre from Russia? No change.
