Iceland in September

Hi -

I was thinking of spending a week in Iceland from Sept 19 - 26. Looking to visit Reykjavík and usual sights like Golden Circle etc, as well as maybe Jökulsárlón Lagoon.

I know Sept not peak season & is colder...but will I still be able to get around, or will the weather, lack of transport, or seasonal closings hinder my visit this time of year? Can I do the boat trips in the lagoon in Sept? If not, is it still worth the visit?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I've been to Jokulsarlon a few times and not felt the need to go on the boat trip.

Off-season tourism to Iceland is growing substantially and there are increasing things offered to these tourists. You are hardly even a month out of season: you might see a bit of fresh snow on the tops of hills, but unlikely to see it in towns and farms. You can get around all year in Iceland, but the buses will already be on winter timetable, and a lot of the high-season-only things will already have closed. Who knows? you could even have a week of nice weather.

I was there last year, a few weeks later than you're planning and we were still able to get around quite well in just a regular car (not a 4X4). Most of the days were cloudy, not sunny and a couple days were snowy at times. Some of the parks that were more inland were closed, but the golden circle, etc were still accessible. It's definitely a decent time to go, but make sure to leave yourself a couple days flexibility for bad weather--don't pack your schedule too tightly.
