I´m swung outInterest forums / Culture Vultures
Music wise, that is. I have the impression that I have come to a point where I have heard every music that´s important. New things all sound the same, the old things I know already. The Waterboys and the Christians seem to be gone, Billy Joel is all but history, Jacques Brel and Edith Piaf ARE history. What´s going on with the Beautiful South, with the Pogues, with Glenn Frey and the Simple Minds and all the others whose music I grew up with? Only the Boss doesn´t seem to be in retiring mood. OK, from time to time there´s really some surprise coming out of the speakers. Amy Whinehouse´s latest CD was better than expected, this guy managed to sell me a CD just after hearing two of his songs and without knowing him before, and this just blew my mind away. Please, give me some fresh input! Thanks ahead...
I've always been a big fan of former Waterboys' - Karl Wallinger's work. The last album of his I picked up - Egyptology had some interesting stuff on it. | 1
Stop consuming, start producing. Play something non-commercial, like a penny-whistle or ukulele. I listened to some CDs recently, and could appreciate their professionalism, but there's nothing like making one's own joyful noise. | 2
Waterboys, the Christians, Billy Joel were not bad. | 3
II feel your pain. It's all gone downhill since Slim Whitman passed away. | 4
Widespread, I don´t make any noise, I don´t want to pollute the earth more than necessary. | 5
Huh? Wow. | 6 | |
"I have the impression that I have come to a point where I have heard every music that´s important." I'm willing to bet that that's wrong. Have you heard Henryk Szeryng play the Bach Chaconne in D minor? Have you heard Kathleen Ferrier sing Gluck's Che faro? Have you heard Sviatoslav Richter and David Oistrakh play the Franck Violin sonata? Have you heard Leonard Bernstein play and conduct Rhapsody in Blue? Have you heard Louis Armstrong play West End Blues? Have you heard Coleman Hawkins play Body and Soul? Have you heard John Coltrane play Blue Trane? Have you heard Herbie Hancock play Canteloupe Island? Have you heard Horace Silver play Song for My Father? Have you heard Umm Kulthoum sing Al Atlal? They're all important. And of course I could go on. | 7
Have you checked out The Arcade Fire, the Hold Steady, the Decemberists? Or Hedingarna's Kaksi!+ or +Tre? The Fall? | 8
zzzz. I swear, just pick up a uke. Easy as the devil You can quote me on that. | 9
Vinny, don´t take my words literally. Of course there´s still much to discover but I just needed more input (which you gave me - thanks for that). I omitted the classic and jazz part because I dind´t want to make it too complicated. So some of the things you mentioned I know already but the rest I will give it a try. And more input will be greatly appreciated! | 10
