How to satisfy my travel bug in August (female solo traveler on a budget)Interest forums / Older Travellers
I lived & worked in Spain, Morocco, Egypt, Canada, South of France. I have traveled in most European countries, Morocco, Dubai, Oman, South Africa, Thailand (Bangkok, Phuket, Koh Samui), Singapore, Indonesia (Bali, Jakarta & Yogyakarta). Since my divorce 13 years agao, I travel on a strict budget (around 50€ / day). I don't need luxury, I want adventure. I'm 47 now, and the travel bug is getting worse... August my teenagers are gone. Another month of pottery in Joburg came to my mind, with some charity work on the side. But then I thought: mmm, I'd rather wait for warm weather, and seek adventure elsewhere. I have no travel companion. So safety traveling alone is an important issue. I use common sense of course, and dress appropriately also.
You can live quite well for around 50 euro per day in Malaysia in quite a number of towns and islands. | 1
Agree that 50€/day is pretty comfortable for SE Asia. Burma, Laos, and the islands east of Bali are all fine destinations in my book. Burma was incredibly safe-feeling 2 years ago and I can only assume it's gotten more so. Met several solo woman travellers when there. | 2
Thanks Tribolite. Is it easy to travel by train from Singapore? I have a friend there that I could visit first, and then travel onwards by train/bus/boat. Guessing that would be the cheapest way anyway. And I am not really looking for Western food :D | 3
#3.Yah,it not too difficult to travel by train or air con coaches from Singapore to Penang, with some stops along the way for immigration checks at Singapore/Johore Baru causeway.Check to see if you might have to change train/bus at KL to Penang. Its quite a long journey which might take up to eight hours or more depending on the number of stops along the way. | 4
Train travel from Singapore into Malaysia is easy. It's also possible to get a bus - up to Malacca and KL, or to the east coast - Mersing and then a few days on Pulau Tioman is a great way to recover from jetlag. From KL you can get into the rainforest, or up to Cameron Highlands (fairly cheap hotels available in both). And Penang is a multi-cultural soup of a city - great fun. You can do all this on buses. | 5
Thanks! I found details about train travel on Seat 61 http://www.seat61.com/Malaysia.htm#Choosing_the_best_seats Should have thought of it before, as I used the advice for my train ride from Cairo to Luxor last year. | 6

Mahendra - don't you ever give up? Are you looking for a 'care nurse' by any chance? | 8
