Firstly you need to confirm whether you need a visa to leave the airport, before you travel ... or if a transit visa is obtainable at the airport.

Dubai - I'm not aware that it's any sort of tourist Mecca or hedonist's heaven. I don't think you're going to be snorting illegal substances through $100 bills in the company of stunning women wearing sequinned g-strings. You might be able to go for a swim or a walk. Or smoke a shisha or water pipe if you want to partake in a little slice of local culture. Green tea perhaps?
Dubai does have a lot of filthy rich people lolling around making money whilst exploiting a manual workforce composed almost exclusively of your sub-continental brothers. There are also large communities of ex-pats living the good life. I had a friend who once won first prize, a week's holiday in Dubai, in a competition. Upon return all he could say was : "How unlucky was I?"
Hope you find some fun things to do but it might be a struggle.

Almost certainly true, but it doesn't stop its boosters spruiking its qualities - basically the best holiday in all of the Middle East for the jaded Westerner who has everything. Promoted quite a lot here Down Under.

Second prize was probably two weeks in Dubai.

First off, try to find the Dubai coupon & voucher book - many discounts and 2 for 1 offers. Look on Ebay, e.g..

If you have the vouchers, you can get cheap entrance to Burj Khalifa. Best time is early evening to get the sunset.
There souks to visit - e.g. Gold Souk where gold is sold by weight. Spice Souk - self explanatory.
There are several Malls, including one with an indoor ice skating rink and loads of very expensive shops.
Then, there is the Walk which runs along the marina - nice after dark when there are lots of brightly lit dinner cruise ships sailing up and down.

Places to visit on a short trip, my suggestions are Burj Khalifa, Dubai Museum, Wil Wadi Water Park, Mall of the Emirates and Ski Dubai.
