How I got out of my Sprint contract

I called up Sprint and told them that I was going to be traveling out of country long-term and that I would be out of their coverage area. Mr. X(sprint guy) said that I would need to prove moving by providing some sort of bill(water,gas whatever) in my name in the country. I told him that I would be traveling around staying in places that wouldn't require me to get bills in my name. Mr X then told me to bring a copy of my airline ticket to a local sprint store to show them I was leaving and they would write a note on my account. I did this then called Sprint back and they're cancelling my account at the end of this billing cycle.

I hope this helps anyone trying to cancel their account.

so can you provide some context here...did you have a contract? is there a clause in the contract that states if you are moving out of the country then you can cancel with no fee? I have sprint and will be traveling for 3-4 months later this year and was debating getting rid of it...or at the very least moving to a cheaper plan.

I had a contract with them. There is a clause saying that if you move out of coverage area you can get out of the contract without penalty's. You normally have to provide a bill in said country as proof that you moved. I just explained that I would be traveling around long-term and couldn't provide that.

If your leaving for 3-4 months they wont let you cancel and will push ''stand by'' mode, unless you word it differently.

what is "stand by" mode exactly?

I put my phone in stand by a couple times. I forget the exact price(around $10 a month) but it freezes your account. No texts, calls or data for up to 6 months.

awesome..didn't know about that. DOes your phone just go to voicemail? or is it entirely cut off. This is actually a cool thing to know about for those of us that do longer term travel.

I think it cuts off but don't quote me on that.

What's 'Sprint'?
Is it a mobile (cell) phone/internet co.?

It's a cell phone company in the US...3rd in size behind Verizon and AT&T...with about 60 million customers.
