Hiking/ Trekking Mount Elgon from Kenyan side

Hey there,

my girlfriend and I are going to Kenya on a budget trip for 5 weeks this November and December. We also plan to go to Mount Elgon. We cannot find any recent reviews or information about hiking to the top, all is about climbing. We are in fair, fit condition. We would like to know:
1. What difficulty it is to hik to the top on the Kenyan side?
2. How long does it take? 1 day up and 1 day down? Or longer?
3. Do you need a guide to hike to the top? Or can you do it by youself?
4. Weatherwise, is November/December a good time to hike to the top?
5. What are entrance fees?
Right now we would start from Kitale, but are open for better starting point. Alos can u recommend budget accomodation in Kitale?

Kitale is a good starting point. for h=the trek, you just want to hike or explore other attractions; the caves? though most guests/people are hesitant of visiting the caves; bats are common.
you can stay at kws kapkur bandas or at mt.elgon lodge. these are better options instead of staying in Kitale town.
you can also camp, but bring your own tent/sleeping bags. if you are to use the KWS bandas, they are on self catering basis, so buy supplies prior to leaving Kitale town and carry with you.

There's a road to the base of the summit, its a 1.5hr ride from the gate. better get a vehicle to transfer you. you can make own arrangements, or check with KWS at the gate if they can rent out their 4x4 cruiser for this segment.
give yourself 5 days for the summit; suggested you get a KWS ranger, dont do it alone. its a less visited park, so dont expect it to be busy with tourists doing the hikes and the like.
Park fees around 35$.. confirm with KWS site.. for latest updates.

Hi Alwes, thank you for asking I have been there several times and the best route is Nrb - Kitale - Chorlim Gate- Mutamaiyo - Road end Koitobos. I highly recommend 5 days and you will be able to get to the summit 4222m.
