Hiking through the Lencois Maranhenses

Country forums / South America / Brazil

Hi everybody,
I am planning a trip to the Lencois Maranhenses at the beginning of august. I will have around 3 and a half days to experience the Lencois. My plan was to go to Santo Amaro, spend a night there and, cross the dunes to the sea and then go back. If i dont get that far, ill walk a big loop back to Santo Amaro.
There is the other tour starting from Atins to Santo Amaro, but i think 3 days including a lot of photographing, looking for the best spot etc, might be a little short.
Concerning all this, i have a couple of questions:
Do i need a permit or a guide to enter the park? If i need a guide, around how much are they, and where could i find somebody (The only thing i found was for 150$ a day, which is quite expensive for me beeing a student).
As for the park itselft, are there any dangers in form of animals, quicksand etc? I plan to sleep in a bivouac sac on an inflatable matress, take enough dried food with me and filter the water from the lagoons. As for orientation, i have a GPS and a compass. I did a hike like this for a couple of days along the french coast where there are a lot of dunes as well, i guess the biggest problem is going to be the wind?
For the transfer from Sao Luis to Santo Amaro i read that there is a bus departing from the rodovia in Sao Luiz at 2 pm (ill arrive at 10:00 Saturday at the airport) which can get me to Sangue where i can get a 4x4 to Santo Amaro which usually leaves at 4 or 5pm. How much in total would the taxi - bus- and 4x4 transfer from Sao Luis to Santo Amaro cost? Do the 4x4 wait for the bus coming from Sao Luiz and do they operate every day?
And does anybody knows which part of the Lencois offer the visually most impressive dunes/ lagoons? And is it worth visiting the queimada dos britos / baixada grande?
Thanks a lot for the help and for the other entries here on TT!
