Health (travel) insurance for UK residents aged 60/58 for travel to the US - Cycle TouringInterest forums / On Your Bike
Hello everyone We are planning our next biking trip and we anticipate being away for approx 18 months. We will be starting the in US and while we like the idea of insuring ourselves for the whole 18 months we are very quickly getting to the point where we are considering just insuring ourselves for the US part of the trip. Hubby has a pre-existing condition, which we are happy NOT to be covered. We're not that bothered about insuring our belongings and we could do without the cancellation bit too, it's really worse case scenario where we both get wiped out by a truck, but not killed, and have to be hospitalised and after several months be repatriated. The sticking point seems to be our ages and the fact that we will be travelling on bicycles, as this is considered a 'dangerous' sport now :) In 2008/2010 we used The British Mountaineering Council, good price, great cover although we didn't have to claim. Now they don't seem to do long trips and just about every comparison site I use, or link I follow leads me either to a 'we can't give you a quote', or, they don't insure cycle tourers. The prices I have been able to get so far are coming out at between £500 and £1000 pp for 5 months, and I'm still not sure if they will cover us for cycle touring. So the big question is, does anyone have any recent experience of similar circumstances that they can pass on to us? Many thanks for reading this. Lynne
As you are no doubt aware even the ctc does not cover for more than 100 days and with that being the organisation representing cycle tourist it shows how difficult it will be to find good cover doing such a long trip. The inclusion in the past year or so of most policies classing cycle touring as a dangerous sport is really annoying, previously to my knowledge no policy had this. I doubt you will do better than £500 pp for a 5 month trip if it includes cycle touring, looking around i am being quoted about £100 for one months cycling on an annual policy so your £500 would sound quite a good price. Good luck with your search for better cover and please let us know how you get on as i am sure this will be of great interest on here. | 1
Try insureandgo. Not only do they sponsor Southend United, they specifically cover cycle touring on my annual policy. As many trips as I want of up to 90 days for under £100. I just checked their website and I see they now do an 18 month backpacker policy. Don't know cost or USA cover or if they do cycle touring for that policy, but you may want to look. | 2
Simon, i have checked those policies and as far as i can see they dont cover cycle touring, maybe i have got it wrong but thats the way it looks to me. | 3
sorry........ reading it again it does cover cycle touring but not personal accident or liability | 4
What did you find, in the end? I've been pointed in the direction of Navigator - who will also accept renewals from abroad, which seems useful. | 5
