Half Moon Bay Resort or Lands End or...?

Country forums / Central America / Honduras

Going to Roatan in April. Want to stay at a small, relatively quiet inn or bed and breakfast that has great service, nice rooms, easy access to good snorkling (and beautiful sunsets would also be nice). Don't want to be surrounded by a lot of tourists or feel like I am in Cancun, if you know what I mean. If you had between $50-$90 a night to spend on any place in Roatan, where would it be and why? Thanks for any ideas, suggestions. AJK

My wife and I stayed at Half Moon Bay Resort at the end of June. It is not really an inn or b&b, but it meets the rest of your criteria. There are a bunch of little duplex cabins with porches scattered around a little area on the end of the bay. The rooms are simple, but clean... no frills. With AC was 58us a night. The great things about the place are the deck restaurant that is right on the water, with an ever present breeze, the amazingly friendly people that work there, and the instant access to the best snorkeling I have every done. Kayaks and snorkels are part of the deal. There is a little pier. You step off it and you are about 20 yards off the reef. We loved the location too. It is at the end of West End, so it is very quiet.... during the afternoon, the restaurant got some business, but was not crowded. We just sat for hours, sipping beer and listening to the water on the deck. The coolest thing I did was go for a guided night snorkel with a guy from the Atlantic Dive Shop that is next door (20us for an hour). I saw eels, lobsters, an octopus. It was brilliant.

Roatan in April will be a bit more crowded than June. Semana Santa (Easter week) is high season, so West End and West Bay will be packed. Half Moon Bay is as you go into West End, so it won't be as quiet as in June during the slow season. i stayed at Lands Inn my first day and loved it. it is on the north end and more quiet, but a bit of a walk to the shops, restaurants and snorkeling. scooter rentals are everywhere, but on cruise ship days, prices go up, bus loads of tourist descend on the west end beaches and that is when you'll want to do some sight seeing on the east end of the island. in my opinion West End has the feel of the Florida keys, where West Bay is more like Cancun. in April the are many days that you'll have at least 3 cruise ships docked, that's when you'll want to visit Camp Bay. good snorkeling, the largest beach on the island and best of all no cruise shippers. a couple of good restaurants and trips to the neighboring islands. there are a few great spots to stay on the east end as well. plan ahead and book now, airline prices are down and rooms are still available. for a quiet place in West End check out http://www.roatangeorphis.com/ , my favorite when i want to stay in West End.

I agree with ouchcomics. Half Moon Bay has a lot to offer, but as jimmyroatan pointed out, April can be nuts. I’ve stayed at the mariposa lodge a few times now, they are further back from the street action and offer exceptional service for a really low price. Have a look at options on sites like trip adviser before you commit.

Half Moon Resort or anything else won't get really crowded until Semana Santa. I've been going there for the last ten years and haven't had any problems as long as I avoid that week. If you decide you want to stay there, pm me and I'll send you the owner's email address. I haven't found anything better on the West End. I'm headed there the last week of March and the first two weeks of April. You're in for a great time. Have fun. Mike

Also check out Cocolobo Great B&B in the same area as Half Moon Resort. Bonnie & Ron make you feel like you are home away from home, fantastic sunset view from the pool deck. Quiet, clean, private accommodations, and super breakfast included. Cocolobo pool deck

Just got back from Roatan less than 2 weeks ago-

My husband and I stayed at Land's End Resort- and can't stop raving about it! Adi is a great host, Eva & Joe are awesome bartenders! It's about an 7-8 minute walk to the heart of West End, but that was great for us. We actually stayed 2 weeks at Roatan (the 1st week at West Bay & the 2nd week at Land's End)- we wish we would've chosen to stay the entire 2 weeks at Land's End. We met a lot of nice people during our stay at Land's End. Also, Land's End is just a minute walk from Atlantic Sea Divers- where Joe the Bartender is also an instructor, and from other guest staying at the hotel said he was a great instructor for their course. The nice thing about Land's End is that is quiet if you don't feel like the loud bustling noise of West End, but close enough to the action and night life you that's what you want.

Hope that helps!
