gunung mulu np

Country forums / South-East Asia Islands & Peninsula / Malaysia

Hi there!
We (2 people) want to go hiking in the gunung mulu np. should we fly into mulu directly, will we be able to catch a tour from there? Or should we fly into Miri and have our tour organized from there? How much would such a tour be per day (approximately/ budget!)? Is it necessary to book in advance (which company can you recommend)?
Thanks very much for quick answers!!!

Not sure about the detail and cost of the trip to Mulu from Kuching or Miri but try to call the Visitor's Information Centre at 082 410944 or surf the Sarawak Tourism Board website at www.sarawaktourism.com

When you're in Kuching just walk into some of the travel agents in town and they might be able to make arrangement for you to Mulu.

Enjoy yourself in Kuching.

I would ring Mulu national park directly for Info: (60 85) 792 300 / (60 85) 792 301
(The Visitor Info Centre in Miri couldn't tell me anything.) If there is no accommodation available in the park (it's really busy now) - they can arrange a homestay just outside the park - I paid 10RM a night in the homestay and i think about 20 in the dorm in the park.

You can either get a tour with a 'national park' guide or ask around for an independent guide. When I checked, the prices were fairly similar. If you get yourselves to Mulu, I think you'll have no trouble joining a group - again the Mulu park office will be able to help. Tour prices will vary depend on how many people you are and which tour you want to do.. Last week I got a trip with an independent guide and paid 350RM for the Pinnacles trip and all 4 caves - incl transport within the park, food & 2 nights accom. in camp 5. There were 3 of us. Don't know how much the headhunters trip was.

You will be able to get trips to the caves every day no problems - just ask at the park HQ join a group at the designated times (they meet outside the park HQ).
Flights to Mulu are booked a few days already, but you can get a boat from Miri, or Marudi - it takes a while though.
Hope this helps!

Flights - from KK direct 2-3 times a week or from Miri twice daily. If you fly direct from KK and something goes wrong then you're stuck. The more frequent flights from Miri can give more flexibility. Our flight from KK couldn't land at Mulu 'cos of the Haze, so we had to stay in KK an extra day, catch a flight to Miri and wait in the airport till the haze lifted and jumped on a flight.
Tours - depend if you like everything laid on for you and your budget. Going via a tour operator can cost more but depends on how much you want to do in the park. Chikkitikki's tour sounds a real bargain. I organised mine direct with the national park HQ by email. The adventure caving is fun and as you visit the non-public caves you get to really appreciate the absence of crowds.

Fly, don't take the boat unless you have a whole day to spare each way and enjoy making slow progress.
