Guide Recommendations for EBC/GokyoCountry forums / Indian Subcontinent / Nepal
My wife and I are planning to do a 19-ish day trek through the EBC and Gokyo region, starting and ending in Lukla. We'd like to hire a single porter/guide rather than join a group. Does anyone have recommendations for specific guides that they have used in the past and would recommend?
If you are planning to cross the Cho La, I recommend that you consider a senior Guide who knows the route and can assess the conditions using good judgement based on personal experience. Use a separate porter who will carry gear for both you and your wife. There is an advantage to having one man with you who is not loaded with extra baggage - but free to give you a hand, if needed or carry a day pack for one of you, if necessary. If either of you do have any problems, (illness, accident or simply challenged by the terrain) you will find having the assostamce of two staff a great assest. Hire through a reputable company and ask to meet the Guide prior to the time you are scheduled to leave Kathmandu. Spend some time with him - an afternoon or at least an hour over lunch to chat. Be satisfied and don't hesitate to ask for someone else, if you are not happy with the choice. Nineteen days with someone with whom you don't feel confident and comfortable is not a happy situation. | 1
Question: If you hire the guide in Kat., can the company arrange the flight to Lukla on short notice or must you buy your ticket before arriving in Nepal? Does the client pay for the guide's air ticket to Lukla? | 2
Hi there | 3 | |
We just came back from our trek in the Everest region and had a great time. We were very happy with both our guide and the porter he arranged. My wife had some altitude issues and we adjusted our itinerary a few times, and our guide was very supportive and supremely helpful through everything. | 4
