Getting from Guatemala to Diving in Belize....cost, transport, tips?Country forums / Central America / Belize
Hi there! I am a female traveling solo in August in Guatemala. I would like to do a bit of diving at the end of my trip and am hoping to get up some of the reefs off in Belize. I probably have a 5-7 days. I have read lovely things about Glover and am wondering if anyone has good recommendations of where to stay on the budget end? and what I should budget for this part of the trip - especially if you have stayed here: http://www.glovers.com.bz/index.html 150 for accomodations (unless I use my tent which would 99..) What about getting to and from Guatemala to Glovers? I can't seem to figure out that end from googling... So far this is looking like (+/- misc. costs) about 500-600 dollars if I'm lucky for 5 days. Does that sound right? Thanks
Depending on where you are in Guatemala, there are a few options for getting to Belize. If you're starting from Guatemala City, get an express bus to Flores and change to another express bus (Fuente del Norte or Linea Dorada) to Belize City. The Flores to BC leg takes about 5 hours and costs about US$25. At BC, continue by bus as fare as possible. If you're in the south-east of Guatemala, you can get a water taxi (ferry) from Puerto Barrios to Punta Gorda. I think the fare is around US$50 now, but check the BelizeBus site (google it) for links to the schedule & fare. The trip is a couple of hours. Then continue by bus and taxi. Tropic Air flies between Flores and BC, and to many other destinations in Belize. | 1
Glovers is very nice. You will be there for 6 nights. Bring rice, potatoes and veggies. Fresh fish is for sale every night at around 5PM. Bring a little money for a 5 gallon water jug and a few small extras. The campsites are lovely and they will supply the tents and mattresses. Cooking is done in the community kitchen near the dorms. Yes, you can travel through Flores, San Ignacio, Belmopan, Dangriga and from there a bus or taxi to Sittee River. There is a little store in Sittee River that has food stuffs if you don't get it somewhere else. | 2
