Hi,
From what I've read here the best bet is to look for a guide in Kathmandu and then go to Mustang. How many days would it normally take to start the walk considering the guide needs to get the permit and arrange flights to Jomsom? That will help me plan my arrival in Kathmandu. There will be 3 of us but I'm the one to look for a guide and get the stuff done before the others turn up. We'll only take a guide and go teahouse. The plan is a mid-May start. Would a couple of days be enough notice to book Jomsom flight?

The spring season is winding down by mid-May so it shouldn't take too long to make the arrangements; there will be plenty of agents/guides looking for work and flights should not be booked up. Two days might be enough but some work in advance might pay off - finding the right guide, for example, by taking recommendations, checking taan.org.np and drawing up a shortlist and starting negotiations but waiting until you get to KTM to book so you can meet the guide.

Note there are no direct flights KTM - Jomsom, you will need to get to Pokhara and fly to J from there.

scoodly has provided very good info. I'll just add that if you start around mid May, you'll be back in Jomsom around the end of May. Be aware that this can be a rainy period and if the weather is bad, flights out of Jomsom won't fly. Leave a couple days at the end of your trip so you don't miss an international connection.

Thanks guys. Any legit guide recommendations? Particularly someone who speaks tibetan? (If he's good I'll also consider him for Simikot-Kailash later on). The TAAN site lists a million guides so a head start would be good.

Jnanamargi if you send me a private message by clicking on my name to the left of this message, I'll give you a couple of legit guide recommendations. Unfortunately, neither one speaks Tibetan, but the trekking company that I recommend may be able to find someone that does.

It is better come through trekking Agency rather than personal recommend guide.
