From Uyuni toTupiza and backCountry forums / South America / Bolivia
I'm on a 2 week trip and trying to cut down travel times. I really want to start the tour in Tupiza, but it doesn't seem like there is a great, quick route to get there. I'm considering flying from La Paz to Uyuni and then catching a ride with an empty jeep going back to Tupiza.... Has anyone done this? Is this possible? And is it even worth it? The other option would be flying to Sucre and taking a bus from there, but I'm not sure if I'll have the time to add another stop in my tight itenerary (Rurre and Titicaca multidays). Any help or thoughts are much appreciated. I'll be in Bolivia May 17-30. Thanks!
I would recommend flying to Sucre. Take a bus to Potosi and spend a very worthwhile day there. Then you can catch an early morning bus to Tupiza. if you can squeeze an extra day or 2 in, it's well worth it. | 1
If you time it right you could catch the train in Uyuni and take that to Tupiza, though it'll mean catching the train late at night and getting into Tupiza around 4 AM. Yes, people do catch rides with empty jeeps heading back to Tupiza, though you'll have to pay for the lift all the same. | 2
A good option for you would go to Tupiza from LP by bus to Oruro and train from Oruro to Tupiza. From Tupiza you can make an excursion 4 days ending on the last day of the tour in the Salar de Uyuni to see the sunset. from Uyuni you can take a flight to Rurrenabaque with a stop at LP. From Rurrenabaque is easy to do 3 day tour either pampas or jungle. From Rurrenabaque you can take the flight to LP, and do Lake Titicaca excursion for a day, 2 days or 3 days. | 3
There are now new paved roads from Potosi to both Uyuni and Tupiza, which will make life easier. Potosi Uyuni is 3.5 to 4 hrs by bus, express minivans go from Potosi to Tupiza in a similar time and buses a bit longer. If you flew on an early flight to Sucre you could probably get to Tupiza the same day. | 4
I'm trying to work out how by going to Tupiza you save time. Surely the 3 day tour from Uyuni is probably easier time wise than the tour from Tupiza which is further away and i thought were 4 day tours. Oh may have that mixed up with the loop from San Pedro tours. | 5
