First of all, you're not going to want to call it "Frisco" to anyone who lives in the area.

That said, what kind of places are you looking to stay? Hotels, inns, hostels, old, new? Where is your crafts course? Some nice low-key music venues that host small world/singer-songwriter acts are Ashkenaz (http://www.ashkenaz.com/) or Freight and Salvage (http://www.thefreight.org/). If you are looking for headliners you can check out Cal Performances (http://www.calperfs.berkeley.edu/) or the Greek (http://www.ticketmaster.com/venue/229421). Berkeley people are generally easy-going and friendly, if not occasionally insane, although (as a Berkeley woman myself) I don't know how many non-coeds would respond to being called as "tasty". :)

Call it 'Frisco. Drives the locals (even more) insane. As for cool places:

How to get great TT advice</b>

Be specific. In particular: How much do you have to spend? "Reasonable" doesn't cut it. Give a dollar number.</b> If you worry that people will want to direct you to the highest-priced places, try this: Say how much you’d like to spend, and how high you could go if you had to or if it was really special. No one’s looking for your complete financial statements, but in a country where rooms rent for anywhere from $35 a night to more than $1,000 it would help greatly to have a number so we can give you useful information as opposed to a bunch of vague, impressionistic hoo-hah.

They're touchy because they're so very far beyond cool. They call it "The City" as if that should mean something to the rest of the world.

I can't speak for San Franciscans about their sayings because I live in Berkeley and apparently am among the inferior "bridge and tunnel" people (yes, they also stole that from NYC).

Ogill2000, I think Ashkenaz might be the best place to meet friendly locals, as they have space for dancing, too. Oh, while you're on San Pablo Ave, Albatross is a cozy, non-pretentious pub with occasional live music with friendly locals at the bar.

Another small place with live music you might like is The Starry Plough (http://www.starryploughpub.com/), or La Pena (http://www.lapena.org/) if you like world music. They are both close to the Ashby BART station. Happy listening!

If the budget is $100-$125, I suggest Priceline or Hotwire. See biddingfortravel.com before bidding on Priceline.
