Hi there! Have you heard of the Shetani of Pemba and Zanzibar In Tanzania? Locally known as Popobawa, (Batwing) this creature used to terrorise residents on pemba island in the mid 1990's. Victims, mostly men, would recall waking up to find this one eyed winged creature with a human form, including a penis, pressing down on them, raping them while they lay there paralysed with fear. It seemed to favour men; (especially men who did not believe such a thing existed) flying in through open windows during the night to do its dirty deed. No doubt, after that experience, the unfortunate victims were converted into believers! The various witchdoctors that resided on Pemba got together to banish the Popobawa across the waters to Zanzibar, where its residents await its re-emergence, with their windows closed. Note: Pemba is a main centre of witchcraft in the world, with people coming from Central Africa and the Caribbean to seek advice and remedies. Another legend worth looking up, would be the tale of the "vulture men of Port Harcourt" in Nigeria. Also based in the 1990's, I think, people would recall seeing this birdlike creature flying low above the ground and then land, transforming into human form, where it would be descended upon by a mob, beating it nearly to death, before being rescued by the police. Laugh all you like at these tales. But, take care on your wanderings in Africa, lest the creatures of the African netherworld come and ...Getcha!!
