Fort Dauphin trip autumn 2011

I'm a middle aged woman who's travelling solo to Fort Dauphin next September and staying for a month. I have a friend who works there, and as her job is full time my days will be mainly my own. She has broad general knowledge of the local tourism industry but she's a little hazy about details. I'm hoping someone can help me, so I can work out a proper budget and itinerary.

I'm mainly aiming to work on my tan, potter around Fort Dauphin and hire a 4x4 with driver to see the wildlife.

Is it safe for a single woman to sunbathe on the public beaches or should I stay in the hotel grounds? If so should I start saving up now for the more expensive hotels or are the medium priced/budget ones ok? How much are the single supplements? Is it possible to stay in the Mandrare River Camp as an independent traveller? If yes, how do I access their rates? Is there anywhere to stay near Andohahela that doesn't involve camping? I can't find these details on the net and any information would be useful.
