Flights from UK to TromsoCountry forums / Scandinavia & the Nordics / Norway
Dear fellow travellers, I am planning on heading up to Tromso from the UK to see the Northern Lights in December 2013/January 2014. I'm getting slightly confused by the seemingly conflicting information I am reading regarding how best to fly from the UK to Tromso; can anyone offer any enlightenment on the easiest way to get up there? There doesn't appear to be any direct flights running from the UK to Tromso, is this right? My ideal scenario will be a flight from London to Bergen (which I did last year from Heathrow), stay for a couple of days in Bergen before getting a flight up to Tromso- is this possible? Many thanks in advance!
No there are no direct flights from thew UK or Bergen to Tromso. Seen as you have already seen Bergen why not go via Oslo and spend time there. | 1
What about Norwegian from Gatwick to Bergen? Wideroe fly Bergen-Tromso. However you are not wanting to leave the airport, you more likely to find convenient connections via Oslo Gardemoen.
Is this time of year dictated by the time you have available, or by the other activities you intend to do when there? The difficulty of going in midwinter is that there is very little daylight to do anything else. In general its better to go Feb/March because the weather is usually a bit better (though weather can never be guaranteed), the northern light activity is usually a bit more (again no guarantees) and you have more daylight to do other stuff in the day. | 2
read it correctly it doesn't say no flights from UK to Bergen. On none of my searches did wideroe come up so apologise for the misleading info on that part. | 3
My apologies.
Often the quickest way to find out who flies where from what airport is to look at the Wikipedia page for the airport, as not all airlines come up through flight engines. Though of course confirm it against the airlines' own websites. | 4
Many thanks for your replies. Yes, have also been to Oslo and don't particularly want to go back there so soon and Bergen is a much more interesting city than Oslo for my sister to see. My problem with Wideroe was where information states there's one flight with them from Bergen to Tromso once a day but I haven't been able to find any on their website timetable? Or was it the price was ridculous? I'll have to double-check. Didn't realise there might be more chance of seeing the Northern Lights in Feb/March? I might reconsider when I go in that case as more daylight time would be useful- thanks for this! However, we may be restricted on the time when we can go and just after Christmas could be ideal for us. If push comes to shove I will have to fly London to Oslo with a connecting flight up to Tromso. | 5
That was it, I've just double-checked the Wideroe timetable and there doesn't appear to be any direct flights from Bergen to Tromso, only connecting Bergen-Oslo-Tromso??? | 6
I've just double-checked the Wideroe timetable and there doesn't appear to be any direct flights from Bergen to Tromso, Check it again. There's a direct flight on Sundays. | 7
The rare direct flight from Bergen to Tromsø is a smaller, slower plane so may not be much faster that flying via Oslo. You can also fly via Trondheim but I think all flights from Trondheim to Tromsø have a stop in Bodø so it will take longer. Norwegian flies direct from Gatwick to Tromsø but only in the summer saeson. | 8
Thanks for the info everyone. | 9
Norwegian will start direkt flights London Gatwick - Tromso twice a week, Saturdays and Wednesdays, in April 2013. It's not possible to book further ahead than October 2013, but I guess in a month or three tickets for Dec.-Jan. will be available. Prices in October varies between £55-£80 one way. Book early to get cheapest price. | 10
