Flamingo spotting in Portugal? Where and when?

Country forums / Western Europe / Portugal

Hi,

In two weeks I'm leaving to Portugal for a few weeks, spending some days in Lisbon, and then drive to the south. I read something about spotting flamingo's. It's hard to find good information about where and when. (Setúbal might be an option?) Is summer a good time of the year, or are they only around in winter?

Any tips are welcome, would make our holiday a little more exotic and exciting :)

Thanks!

Hello,
best bet in my opinion is Tavira, Algarve. Google it up, there should be some results on flamingos. If they are not around at the time of your visit, the region of the Western Algarve (Aljezur) is known for good bird watching. No flamingos, sorry.

Rio Formosso is the famous area for Flamingos not sure if they are there in the summer though

Thanks for your answer, it helped the googling :)
I e-mailed a bit around to see if it was possible to see them during the summer.
Didn't get an answer yet, it seems the chances are way smaller than in autumn/winter, but I hope for the best!

thanks!

Hi there,

In fact you have quite a good number of spots where you can see flamingos in Portugal depending where you will be.

Tavira - someone already said about Tavira and is in fact a nice place, if you go to Tavira look for a place called "Quatro Caminhos", I already took some photos of flamingos here;

Setubal - not the best place, however there is a "tide mill" near Setubal called "Moinho de Mouriscas" and you might find them there as well;

The best spot ever? Alcochete near Lisbon, there is an impressive colony and you can arrive near them.

The best time of the year? Fall.

You can see general informations about Portugal in my blog: http://www.walkinginportugal.blogspot.pt/

If you want some more details, do not hesitate to send me an email (is in the blog) I will be happy to help.

Enjoy your time in Portugal.

Thanks for the answers!

hesitating between Tavira and Lagos. Or just not knowing which are the nice places along the coast, and which are the terribly partyparty places...

We'll see!

Hello,

I recommend a bird observation pedestrian walk in Tejo Estuary. This place is one of the most important wet zones for birds, on a European level. If you want, you can do this program with your entire family.

Find more information here: http://www.travel-tailors.com/detalhado.php?i=324</a>

Have fun!! ;)

If youe main focous is birdwatching so Tavira is much much better (no comparison) , if you want partyparty both Tavira and Lagos are great.

Have fun,
