Hi, my friend and I are travelling to India for 5 weeks in July & August. It is for both of us our first time in India. We arrive in Delhi and have booked 2 nights in a hotel there. We had planned to go to Agra then take in Rajasthan, but due to the weather at that time of year, perhaps we are better heading North to Himachal/Ladakh? Is it going to be really unbearable in the rest of the country? Any suggestions welcome. Thanks, Natalie

yes a good idea to go up north to himachal pradesh and ladakh. if its you're first time in the mountain, read up on altitude sickness before heading to ladakh.

summer can be quite unbearable in many parts of india if you're not used to living there..i was in amritsar in june, temperatures became too strong (38-40 C) for me after 10:00 - 4:00 pm...once i got to dalhousie and chamba valley it was excellent temperatures (22 degree c). the monsoons that come in june/july help give respite but not to the extent you'd wish for.

i would not recommend rajasthan at all at this time unless you can bear the heat.

Natalie,

The monsoon is hot and wet and quite survivable as long as you're not made of sugar. The locals love it and its a good time to be around as the farmers make the most of it. But you've got 5 weeks which is quite enough to do both a bit of the flat land as well as the dry climes of Ladakh. Fly up to Ladakh and get the bus back. The bus back is worth doing but only once. What ever you do buy a big black umbrella. Its great for both the sun and rain as well as beating off gropers and dogs.

Spend sometime in the Northeast. It's mostly mountainous and the monsoon will be on. Temperatures are quite comfortable. Bring a sweater for nights. There's few tourists beyond Darjeeling if you want to see what that looks like. Also, the population is less dense and the tribal people are more relaxed. Not you're average Indian vacation though.
